About Tool Glue
First Lesson: Simplification
Tool Glue was discovered more than invented. We had too many tech tools, so we had to simplify. We decided "all in one" software was the solution.
But then we lost functionality. We couldn't attribute sales, much less track the customer journey, because the all in one CRM was limited.
So then we decided to get the best of the best, for each component of our tech stack & leverage their "native integrations".
That didn't work either because some of our tools didn't "talk" to each other.
So should we hire a programmer?
Should we build our own software?
Or just make our business fit into the CRM?
We didn't know where to turn... but we kept hearing that little voice saying "simplify", "keep it simple", "80/20", etc.
So we knew we had to stick with our all in one tool.
Which meant we had to find a way to make the all in one tool talk to our other tools.
Which led to the discovery that resulted in Tool Glue...
Second Lesson: APIs & Webhooks
We realized that our all in one tool provided API access.
And as long as our other tools also provided API access, then we could use webhooks (glue) to connect their API to our API.
It worked! Like magic!!!
No tech tool would make it today if they didn't provide API access.
Really that was the little bit o' intel we were missing.
Our tools are now talking to each other.
All of them!
Before we felt like we could accomplish 80% of what we wanted to. And that the only way to achieve 100% would be to build custom software.
But that all was solved when we discovered APIs & webhooks. Now we can do 100% of everything we want to do.
Which means most of the customer journey is automated.
And it means that most of the manual tasks are automated.
And it means that for every task that MUST be done by a human, the right person is notified... at the right time. And reminded. Again. And again.
It's a well oiled machine. And we are free to live life; finally.
Third Lesson: This Applies to Everyone
Yet, we knew that most businesses do NOT have this code cracked.
If we had to describe business in one word, it would be "chaos".
What business is not full of chaos?
What business owner is not thinking about their business when they are with their family?
Doesn't every successful business serve not only its' customers, but also its' executives & shareholders?
Did we really get into business for chaos?
Yet Google and these other big tech companies with hundreds of thousands of employees are less chaotic then our small businesses.
How does that make any sense?
It's because they have technology working for them.
Their strength is tech, so they get to leverage it first.
And this means that 80% of the work is done by machines.
Which means more margin for owners and less work for employees.
The good news is... that time has arrived for us, too.
These tech tools are mature now. And they are accessible. You don't need to spend millions to get your vision working.
And you don't need to be a programmer. You only need to be an integrator.
It takes some time, but you only need to know a little code and some strategy.
